TYLER, Texas — The sixth annual Peace of Mind conference took place Friday at Green Acres Crosswalk Conference Center in Tyler.

The event aims to educate and encourage individuals and families about mental health issues, according to the organization.

"Peace of Mind is the region's largest mental health conference, with more than 900 attendees each year," Chris Taylor, executive director of Samaritan Counseling Center of East Texas, said.

According to the Centers for Disease Prevention and Control, one in five adults in the United States experience mental illness in a single year.

Taylor says the conference makes a big impact for those dealing with mental health concerns.

"One thing we know is that proximity to resources means a lot," Taylor said.

Along with local resources people heard from guest speakers on issues like the role of medication in mental health.

"What we really hope for is everyone walks away with a tool or tip that something they can use immediately to help in that process," Taylor said.
