Pine Tree ISD starts community clothing drive ahead of the holidays

Pine Tree ISD is hosting a School Clothing Drive from October 28 to November 15.

LONGVIEW, Texas — Before crossing the stage next year, Pine Tree senior Isabella Nix is hoping to bring more attention to an issue that impacts students across the school district: Poverty.

"I recognized a need with certain Pine Tree students," said Nix. "If we can help, let's do it."

It was a simple observation by Nix. She says she realized that not every student is as fortunate as the next one, and she decided to do something to help those in need.

"There's one-fourth of students living in poverty, and that really stirred my heart," Nix said. "I realized that every year, I go through my closet during spring cleaning, and I donate to the goodwill or something."

However, this time around, Nix sought out to make an impact in the lives of her classmates and fellow Pirates as opposed to strangers.

"These are my peers that these clothes are going to, and I thought why not donate to my peers instead of just donating to people I don't know."

Nix proposed a clothing drive to the district, which started today and will continue through November 15.

Pine Tree High School National Honor Society, the middle school student council and PTISD Counselor Elizabeth Banta are joining Nix in encouraging members of the community to clean out their closets and donate gently used clothes to students in need.

"We're seeking clothes for all age groups, so from Pre-K to high school, all sizes," Nix explained. "The clothes must be in dress code. We've just started today, and we've already gotten three bags of clothing donated already, and that's fantastic!"

Donations will be distributed to the students and families of PTISD through the district's Pirate Closet, which has served as a resource for at least the last ten years.

"It's worked out really well so far. There's been kids that have been really blessed by it, so the more the merrier."

All donations can be dropped off at Pine Tree Middle School during the hours of 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.

There is a a list of acceptable donations and needs on the district's website
