NACOGDOCHES - It's been more than 30 years since SFA looked outside the campus for a new Director of Athletics.
But after Robert Hill announced his retirement, the school felt like a nationwide search was necessary. And on Thursday, they introduced their new Director of Athletics to the public.
Ryan Ivey takes over the job after spending the past 3 years at Austin Peay. He takes over an athletic program that has had some success in recent years. But he has his sights set on bigger goals.
Ivey says, "We want to be the leading mid-major athletics department in the country and I think that's a lofty vision and a lofty goal for us."
Ivey officially took over on July 1 and he immediately has some issues to deal with, namely the investigation into football coach Clint Conque. Ivey says that investigation is underway and he was unable to comment further on it.
While he's only been in East Texas for a few weeks, he already recognizes the importance of the people in this area.
He says. "If the people in your own backyard don't feel like you care about them or you're not looking at them then they're not going to support you and so we have to make sure that we're supporting our various communities so that we in turn expect our communities to really support us as well."
