Smith County to hold multiple meetings for veterans outreach

On Tuesday, Smith County Commissioner's kicked off a summer-long outreach initiative designed for the county to get feedback on how to better serve the local veteran community.

SMITH COUNTY — Local veterans may soon find it easier to have a variety of their needs met at the Smith County Veteran Services Office.

On Tuesday, Smith County Commissioner’s kicked off a summer-long outreach initiative designed for the county to get feedback on how to better serve the local veteran community.

“It is impossible for us in civilian life to fully reciprocate the sacrifices made by our veterans,” Smith County Judge Nathaniel Moran said. “But, that should not stop us from making our best efforts to do so.”

Titled “Operation Reciprocity: Serving Those who Serve Us,” the initiative will feature four outreach meetings where officials will discuss the services the county office provides, how it can assist veterans with certain claims handled by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs and more.

Officials said resources are available to more than 17,000 veterans in Smith County.

The office provides information and advocacy services to veterans and their families throughout the claims, appeals and benefit processes with Veterans Affairs.

Smith County Veteran Services Office staff also serves as counselors and coordinates the Smith County Veterans Treatment Courts.

Tuesday’s meeting also highlighted several veteran community leaders, as well as Smith County employees who served in the military.

The county also unveiled new informational brochures that the Veterans Service Office will use to better communicate the services it offers and point veterans to other local organizations that can help them.

“Our dedication to the highest service to our veteran community will continue beyond this summer initiative,” Moran said. “But, this is when it starts.”
