Spring was in the air as the Kilgore Public Library opened its 'seed library'

The Kilgore Public Library opened its 'seed library' for people to check out seeds.

KILGORE, Texas — The Kilgore Public Library started its newest program, the 'seed library,' and it's just like it sounds. Instead of books, people can check out seeds to grow their own gardens.

"I'm hoping that people will be able to garden, people that haven't had resources or just weren't sure where to start that this gives them a beginning area to start," said Kaitlin de Graffenried, the library's technical services and programming coordinator.

She said after visiting other libraries, including the Tyler Public Library, and learning about seed programs, she knew it was something she wanted to do.

"It's an opportunity for people in our community to check out seeds from a library, take them home, grow their own garden," said de Graffenried.

People are able to pick out six different packets of seeds so as to not cross pollinate.

As to be expected, checking out seeds is different from checking out books.

"We ask that people learn how to save seeds and bring them back or they consider donating them," she explained.

That way the library will have enough seeds available in the future. But if something goes wrong with gardening and someone is unable to bring back seeds, she says there won't be a fine, "because gardens a part of nature and accidents happen and it's unpredictable."

The only requirement to check out seeds, is to be a member of the Kilgore Public Library, which is free.
