Van Zandt County Jail captain arrested for alleged inappropriate relationship with inmate

SMITH COUNTY, Texas — A Van Zandt County Jail captain has been arrested on charges stemming from an alleged inappropriate relationship with an inmate.

Captain Winnifred Boles, 54, of Ben Wheeler, was booked into the Smith County Jail on Friday for violations of civil rights person in custody/sexual. She has since been released on $50,000 bond.

According to the Grand Saline Sun, officials say Boles conducted an inappropriate relationship with a trusty who was being housed in the Van Zandt County Jail.

The newspaper reports the case is being investigated by the Texas Rangers.

The Van Zandt County Sheriff's Office released the following statement:

"An allegation was made against Jail Captain Wendy Boles. The matter was turned over to the Texas Rangers for independent investigation. The Van Zandt County Sheriff's Office does not want to interfere with the Rangers' investigation; therefore we will not comment further on the matter. Any questions related to this matter should be directed to the County's attorney, Robert S. Davis of Flower Davis, PLLC."
