Carthage advances, Pittsburg loses a thriller in state quarterfinals

We had 3 East Texas teams play in a pair of state quarterfinal football games on Friday night.

LONGVIEW - We had 3 East Texas teams playing in a pair of state quarterfinal games on Friday night and both games were rematches of district contests earlier in the year.

In 4A Division 1, Carthage and Henderson met for the 6th time in the last 3 seasons. The Bulldogs have ended the Lions year in each of the last 2 postseasons. And this year was more of the same. In the pouring rain, Carthage slowly opened up a lead. They were up 14-0 at the half, and that would turn out to be enough as they went on to win 28-7.

In 4A Division 2, another district rivalry was renewed as Pittsburg and Pleasant Grove met in Frisco. The Pirates jumped out to a 14-0 lead, but the Hawks responded and were up 20-14 at the half. The 2nd half was a very back and forth affair, but Pleasant Grove always seemed to be one possession ahead and they would go on to win 44-41.

Saturday, there are 3 more quarterfinal games involving East Texas teams. Longview will play Spring Westfield in Waco, John Tyler will play Highland Park in Frisco, and Malakoff will take on Atlanta in Longview.
