HAWKINS- "I saw my name pop up on the screen right next to the New York Yankees logo and literally jumped off my couch." Derek Craft describes the moment when he realized he was drafted to the Yankees during the 2018 MLB draft.
The Hawkins High School grad was originally supposed to be taken by the Red Sox, but the Yankees swooped in on him before that could happen. "Just getting the call...big sigh of relief," Craft stated.
The 6-foot-8 right hander had a 1.89 ERA on the season for the UT San Antonio Roadrunners, before being taken in the 16th round by New York.
As Craft prepares to head to Tampa to join the Yankees rookie ball affiliate on Sunday, he will take a piece of Hawkins with him. "This community has just been overwhelmingly supportive. I can't thank them enough, and this town is just absolutely amazing. I'm extremely proud to be from this community."
