MARSHALL, Texas — 2 years ago, the Marshall football team made a big splash as they hired former Desoto head coach and SMU assistant Claude Mathis to be their new head coach.
Mathis spent 2 years in Marshall and led the Mavericks to back-to-back district titles. But last week, he headed back to the DFW area as he was named head coach again at Desoto.
Marshall wanted to go through a quick process to find his replacement and that's exactly what they did. On Wednesday, they formally introduced his replacement, naming Jake Griedl as their new head coach.
Griedl spent the past 2 years as the Marshall offensive coordinator and while this will be his first head coaching job, he's excited about the opportunity.
Griedl says, "I will not let the title go to my head. This football team is this community's. Now I may manage that, but at the end of the day, these are your kids, this is your community."
