TYLER - There are many high school football camps throughout the summer, and another one rolled through Tyler on Tuesday as Texas A&M-Commerce had a camp at TCMF Rose Stadium.
This was the last of 8 camps the school has brought to different cities in East Texas. High school football athletes from all over the East Texas area were able to showcase their talent, while improving their skills in on the gridiron. According to Lions head coach Colby Carthel, staying local and bringing these camps to the public help increase the school's reach in the state.
"East Texas is a big stop for us and it's a big footprint in our recruiting area so now we get to see all these kids here and hopefully have them on campus to see the game day environment and learn more about our university," says Carthel.
Texas A&M-Commerce is coming off of back-to-back Lonestar Conference Championships. The Lions finished last season with a 10-2 record and are hoping for another ring to add to their collection, but coach Carthel says playing for another championship isn't what's important.
"The real success isn't on my hand it's what our kids are doing in the community and in the classroom they're graduating we had the highest GPA the school has ever had in the football program this spring and that's what it's really all about."
