UIL adds instant replay for football state title games

The UIL made a big announcement on Thursday as they added instant replay in a limited capacity in 2018.

AUSTIN - The UIL made a big announcement on Thursday that will affect players and coaches all over the state.

Starting in 2018, instant replay will be used in a very limited capacity. It will ONLY be used in football...and even then, it will ONLY be used in the state championship games.

CBS19 spoke with UIL Director of Athletics Susan Elza on Thursday evening and she told us that it's possible that replay could be expanded to other sports in the future.

But for now, she's focused on rolling it out in the football championship games and making sure it's done right.

Dr. Elza says, "We have everything in place, we understand how it works...we're comfortable with where we are with it, just starting it in those state championship games where it's in a controlled environment and we can assess how we put the rule in place."

Dr. Elza also said since the games are broadcast on TV, they won't have to add much to use replay this year. However, the one big addition will be NCAA review officials, since the high school officials in the state aren't trained to use the replay system.
