MINEOLA - Every high school football team undergoes changes from year to year.

But not many go through quite as many changes as the Mineola Yellowjackets have this year.

Starting quarterback Jeremiah Crawford and starting running back Chantz Perkins have both graduated. And head coach Joe Drennon has moved on to another job in Hallsville.

While that would spell disaster for some teams, for Mineola, it's just another challenge to overcome.

Mineola senior safety Dalton Harris says, "It's very different, to be really honest. All the guys that we've grown up with and everybody that we've had since my freshman year are gone, so its a change, for sure."

Long-time defensive coordinator Luke Blackwell takes over on the sidelines. He says his familiarity with the program will make this transition much easier.

"I think for the most part, the kids know what to expect, the coaching staff knows what to expect, and it's more of us just kind of getting in and going to work and kind of doing the things that we know how to do," Blackwell explains.

While the offense will look quite a bit different this year, the defense won't change quite as much. And that unit could be the key to having another strong season.

Coach Blackwell says, "Those guys have a lot of experience for us. It's nothing flashy, but it's guys that play with effort, play hard, and do the little things right. So certainly we'll count on some of that experience carrying over."
