DPS securing roadways during busy holiday travel

As travelers hit the road the Texas Department of Public Safety, along with other agencies, are taking part in the nationwide CARE program.

TYLER, Texas — The holiday season can be one of the busiest seasons for many people traveling on the roads.

With the pandemic slowly winding down, more travelers are hitting the streets and the high amount of traffic is begging to affect some East Texans' daily commutes.

“I just wish people would calm down because people have kids in their cars and things," said Tyler resident Maxine Walter. "I wish people would take that into consideration and just enjoy this time of year."

The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), along with other agencies, are taking part in the nationwide CARE (Crash Awareness and Reduction Effort) operation.

It’s an operation effort designed to ensure drivers are following state traffic laws.

“Operation CARE stands for combined accident reduction effort," said DPS Sgt. Jean Dark. "The combined accident reduction effort works across the nation to hopefully be a deterrent to those who would speed those who would not wear their seatbelts for those who would drink and drive."

Sgt. Dark also advises drivers to practice patience if you happen to be in a heavy traffic situation this holiday season.

“Remember, everybody's trying to get to their, destination, their family gathering and so having a little bit more patience or giving yourself a little more time because of the increase in traffic volume can help reduce that stress level, at least a little bit during the holiday,” said Sgt. Dark.
