New convention center proposed by City of Tyler

The City of Tyler is proposing a new convention center to be brought to the Rose Complex.

Twenty thousand visitors, that's how many people the City of Tyler says it's losing every year from not having a big enough convention center.

It's also one of the reasons the city is proposing a new convention center and convention hotel at the Tyler Rose Complex.

This isn't the first time Tyler has tried to bring in a new convention center and hotel.

Several years ago there was a proposal for it to go in South Tyler, but the developer wasn't able to get funding so it fell through.

This time around, Stephanie Franklin with the City of Tyler said things will be different.

It's all a part of a master plan to grow and develop Tyler.

The city is working with the developer Garfield Private/Public L.L.C, based out of Dallas.

"It is with a developer from a conference center side of things, a developer whose done several conference centers across the state, across the nation, and even internationally," Franklin said.

Franklin said the proposal is for a 20,000 square foot conference center, and a hotel with 200 rooms to allow for larger conventions.

Since they're just in pre-planning, there isn't a cost estimate for the construction yet, but they have agreed to pay the developer $12,000 a month for four months.

"To pay architects, engineering firms, experts in the field, to really look at this site, and understand what the costs will be moving forward for construction," Franklin said.

As for where the center will go...

"The original Rose Complex master plan as that we would tear down Harvey Hall, and we would build a new site," Franklin said. "So this can look at tearing down this facility and locating that in a better spot on the property, or it can look at possibly connecting to Harvey Hall and how that all flows."

Ultimately the decision is up to City Council, and all of the details from the developer will be presented to them at their meeting on Wednesday morning.

The city doesn't have a timeline for the construction project yet, they said that will come after the project is approved.

Franklin said it's too early in the planning to make those decisions, but if the plan does get passed, they'll have to have discussions with people who will be effected, and the surrounding community.
