WHITEHOUSE, Texas — The outside lane of FM 346 in Whitehouse, between Crepe Myrtle and Pecanwood, will remain closed as crews work to repair damage caused by  "sizeable" sinkhole that opened up Tuesday.

According to the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), the westbound inside lane is now open and the roadway is scheduled to be completely open Thursday evening.

TxDOT said the sinkhole opened up on FM 346 between Pecanwood and Crepe Myrtle Rd. in Whitehouse. Repairs began Wednesday morning.

"Motorists are encouraged to avoid the area if possible. If travel is necessary in this area, please reduce your speed and pay attention in the work zone," TxDOT said.

The sinkhole was discovered around 9 a.m. Tuesday when a city vehicle drove over it and the ground opened up underneath.

Crews on scene tell CBS19 the erosion stems from a nearby drainage creek that runs under the road. The ground is swept away underneath the outside right lane.

CBS19 will update this article as more information becomes available.
