'Dangerous' suspect arrested by Tyler police

A Crimestoppers tip helped police arrest a suspect wanted on a number of charges including evading arrest.

Tyler police arrested a man Friday wanted for assault and evasion charges.

According to Tyler police, officers arrested Corey Edmond Simpson in north Tyler Friday afternoon. Police received help from a Crimestoppers tip.

Simpson was wanted for two counts of evading detention with a vehicle, a third degree felony, and assault causes bodily injury of a family member, a Class A misdemeanor.

According to police, Simpson was leaving a home while an officer was outside waiting for back-up.

The officer attempted to stop Simpson before he could leave. Simpson jumped in the driver’s seat of a gold Buick. He put the car in reverse and rammed a police car causing the officer to jump out of the way to keep from being hit. The officer was not injured.

Simpson left Old Omen Road and drove south into the Lake Tyler area of Whitehouse. Simpson also struck a vehicle at Old Omen and University, no injuries reported.

Police received two more warrants for Simpson for Aggravated Assault on a Peace Office, a first degree felony, and evading arrest with a vehicle, a third degree felony.

At about 6 p.m. Friday, police say Simpson was attempting to by a new phone at a Metro PCS store on W. Gentry Parkway. Officers responded to a tip and arrested Simpson without incident.

Police say they found a stolen 2013 Ford Fiesta from Smith County.
