Skunk tests positive for rabies off of Old Jacksonville Highway in Tyler

Pet owners are encouraged to make sure their dogs and cats are currently vaccinated for rabies.

TYLER, Texas — The city of Tyler said Wednesday a skunk has tested positive for rabies near the 1200 block of Larkspur Lane.

According to the city, Tyler Animal Services was alerted by the Texas Department of State Health Services that one skunk has rabies. People and animals with possible exposure have been identified and addressed.

"It is critical for people not to handle bats, skunks, raccoons or other wild animals. It is important for children to tell their parents of any contact with wild animals or any sick animals. If a person is bitten by an animal, the bite incident must be reported to the Local Rabies Control Authority, Tyler Animal Services Director Shawn Markmann, for proper investigation," the city of Tyler said.

Pet owners are encouraged to make sure their dogs and cats are currently vaccinated for rabies. It's a Class C misdemeanor if someone does not vaccinate their pet by four months of age.

People who have questions about rabies control can contact Tyler Animal Services at (903) 535-0045.
