Apps to look for on your kids' phones: Kik, LiveMe and Whisper

We are taking a closer look at three apps that are popular with kids, and the challenges that they can present.

TYLER, Texas — All week long we are breaking down 15 apps you should be aware of on your kids' phones. We are taking a closer look at three apps that are popular with kids: Kik, LiveMe and Whisper.

  1. Up first is the chatting app Kik.

Kik's homepage says they are connecting the world through chat and Kik claims to be a "fun, safe place to connect." A key feature of the app is you don't have to register your phone number to sign up, making it a bit more anonymous and private than other apps out there.

It is geared specifically toward teens 13 and up, but in theory, anyone can sign up and chat with your kids.

  2. Next is LiveMe.

LiveMe is a popular platform where kids can broadcast and show off their various talents. The company says it is helping a quote community of independent creators to succeed in an increasingly competitive digital landscape.

The terms of service say users must be 18 or up to sign up, but kids are often using the app and it is possible to view inappropriate content.

  3. Whisper is another concerning app.

Whisper claims that you can express yourself openly, and it gives kids an outlet to share things anonymously. However it can also open them up to cyberbullying. As you might expect, an additional concern is with the ability to post whatever you want.

Whisper often shows posts of a sexual nature. Adding fuel to the fire, kids can also turn on location based services so people can find where they are. Whisper was in the news yesterday, as a Fort Worth man was arrested after child pornography was found on his Whisper app.

Like it or not, these apps are here to stay and like anything that is popular within a generation, kids will find ways to access them. So be sure to have conversations with your kids on a regular basis. When you are talking with your kids about the potential dangers of apps walk them through what can be shared online - things like a favorite food or a favorite color - and what shouldn't be shared online like home addresses and other identifying details. Finally, go through each app with them and help them turn off all location based settings.
