Turkey named Dolly Pardon becomes ambassador for East Texas city's first turkey pardon to celebrate goodwill, literacy

Van Community Library director Lisa Mays-Gonzalez said Dolly Pardon is a wonderful reminder of gratitude and forgiveness during this Thanksgiving season.

VAN, Texas — The city of Van gathered to promote literacy and goodwill for this Thanksgiving season with an exceptional turkey at the first Turkey Pardon Wednesday morning.

City of Van Mayor Tammy Huff officiated the historic Thanksgiving event with the first turkey ambassador who is named after an iconic singer.

"The turkey is named Dolly because she is a strong female role model. It's a tribute to her southern roots and she is a very strong literacy advocate, so that ties in perfectly with our library programs," said Lisa Mays-Gonzalez, Van Community Library director.

Dolly Pardon strutted her stuff with her gorgeous feathers at her first visit to the Van Community Library to educate and entertain children. As an ambassador, she will not only spread literacy and goodwill but also the importance of blessings and second chances for all.

The guest of honor came from Believe in Vegan Ranch, a rescue ranch and educational sanctuary located in Wills Point. At Believe in Vegan Ranch, Dolly Pardon was given a second chance at life.
