Live Christmas trees selling fast across East Texas

A Longview ministry is expected to sell out of Christmas trees by the end of the week. Meanwhile, a farm outside of Tyler is already at limited quantity.

LONGVIEW, Texas — It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas across East Texas and thousands of families have already picked out their perfect tree just in time for the holiday season.

However, if you haven't found your tree, you may want to hurry because many tree farms say they are selling out quickly.

The second annual Woodland Hills Baptist Church Christmas Tree Farm is open for business and Pastor Charles Hunt says they've sold about 50 of their 250 trees. They're hoping to sell out by next week.

"We get them fresh from Holiday Farms in Oregon, and they deliver them in a tractor trailer and they're iced down with snow on them," Hunt said. "They have a very fresh smell. We had wreaths, but all the wreaths have already sold."

Hunt said the profits from these sales goes back into their ministry and helps provide a way for families to attend their private school, Woodland Hills Christian Academy.

"Even though our tuition is half the price of any other Christian school in our area, we still have families that that have trouble financing," said Principal Aaron Perkins. "So it's used to help those families earn a spot in the academy."

This ministry isn’t the only tree farm in East Texas that’s seen an increase in sales.

Heather Reed, owner of Plantation Pines CHRISTmas Tree Farm in Tyler, said they are only a couple of days away from selling their entire stock of trees -- that includes the trees that they’ve grown at the farm and the ones that they’ve shipped in from a different state.

"So that'll be it for us after these two nights," Reed said. "It's been like that for a few years now just to keep trees growing here on the farm."

Reed said they start selling their trees on Thanksgiving Day and are used to having a limited quantity by the following Monday.

"We wish we had more to be able to continue to stay open," Reed said. "We’re just working on growing some trees."

If you’re looking to put a live tree in your home make sure you buy one before they sell out. If you're looking to get in the holiday spirit, Woodland Hills Baptist Church said they'll be hosting a family event where Santa Claus is expected to make an appearance on Saturday, Dec. 2.
