East Texas home shines bright with elaborate 35-minute holiday light show

"Like most Christmas displays, it gets a little bigger every year. So this is what we have this year," show creator Matthew Brown said. "We're very proud of it."

TYLER, Texas — 'Tis the season for holiday lights, and one East Texas homeowner is doing it bigger than most.

It’s caught the attention of many Tylerites, and families are flocking toward the display to get into the holiday spirit. On the intersection of Newbury Court and Castleton Way, people will find Tyler resident Matthew Brown programing over 11,000 lights on his home.

"Like most Christmas displays, it gets a little bigger every year. So this is what we have this year," Brown said. "We're very proud of it."

His light show was slowly gaining popularity throughout the years, but during this holiday season it’s caught the eyes of many social media users. Every year, the street draws a large crowd of people looking at the decorations.

"My aunt mapped the address on her GPS and actually sent them like a thank you card," Tyler resident Markie Hays said. "Or I think it was like a thank you Christmas card for setting this up and allowing everyone to come and look at all the lights."

Brown said his family take about a peek to set up the entire display. It leaves visitors like Hays wondering an important question: how much is their electricity bill?

"The electrical, everyone asks about that," Brown said. "And it's really not that bad because in the old days with incandescent lights, they really were electricity munchers. These days, everyone uses LEDs, which use about 1/10 the electricity. Plus as you can see, all the lights are flashing so they're not on all the time."

He uses his knowledge to creates software which in turn allows him to sequence the lights with the music.

Brown added the show hasn't caused any problems among his neighbors either,

"They haven't kicked me out of the neighborhood or anything. they all say they enjoy it," Brown said. "So that's great. They seem to be in the Christmas spirit too."

For those who want to check out the show, Brown said anyone is welcome to experience it between 5:30 to 10 p.m. every night up until the new year.
