1 charged with murder in shooting that killed Jacksonville High School student

MAYDELLE, Texas — A 20-year-old man has been charged with murder in connection with a shooting that killed a 17-year-old Jacksonville High School student. 

Isiah Mallord, of Jacksonville, was arrested for murder for a shooting that killed Jayden Polk, 17 on Wednesday around 10 p.m. on Ballew Ln., just off CR 1804, in the Maydelle area, Cherokee County Sheriff Brent Dickson said. 

Mallord was held in a Tyler hospital awaiting transport to the Cherokee County Jail, Dickson said. Mallord was the same 20-year-old who was reported to be critically injured at the time of the shooting. 

He has now been transferred to the Cherokee County Jail on bonds totaling $1.35 million. He is also charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Polk was a junior at Jacksonville High School. 

In a statement, Jacksonville ISD said campus counselors, along with additional JISD counselors, have been available on campus to meet with students and staff following the student's death. 

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends," the statement read. 

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, Feb. 24 at 11 a.m. at the Bowens Temple Church in Jacksonville to honor the life of Polk, according to Mercy/McGowan Funeral Home.
