Ex-Van Zandt County Jail sergeant gets 3 years in federal prison for abusing detained person with taser

Court information showed that Yager knew there was no legitimate, law enforcement need to use force and he hit the detainee out of anger.

VAN ZANDT COUNTY, Texas — A former Van Zandt County Jail sergeant has been sentenced to three and years in federal prison for repeatedly abusing a person who was detained by law enforcement with a taser.

David Yager was sentenced to 42 months on Wednesday in federal court after pleading guilty to deprivation of rights under color of the law in July 2022, according to court records.

Last year through a plea, Yager admitted that Feb. 28, 2021, while he was a sergeant at the Van Zandt County Jail, he abused a restrained detainee in the chest with a taser and he also deployed it on him.

Court information showed that Yager knew there was no legitimate, law enforcement need to use force and he hit the detainee out of anger.
