Several roads flooded, closed from heavy rainfall in Cherokee County

Cherokee County officials advise drivers to "turn around and don't drown" if they come across high waters.

CHEROKEE COUNTY, Texas — Heavy rainfall caused massive flooding to occur in several parts of East Texas, including Cherokee County this past week.

As officials are continuing to monitor road conditions, County Road 1405 near Highway 204 remains underwater and a threat to drivers in Cherokee County.

"We've received probably a little over six inches of rain in several different areas. And those have been real heavy and fast coming,"  Cherokee County Pct. 1 Commissioner Kelly Traylor said.

Traylor mentioned several roads have already been shut down from the torrential downpour and said it is highly dangerous to try to drive into high water.

"You're at risk for the water to sweep your vehicle off the road surface. Vehicles could fall in it. You could be trapped in your vehicle. You could drown," Traylor said.

If the rain does not subside for the next 24 to 48 hours, Traylor expects more roads will become inaccessible from flooding.

Cherokee County officials are planning to keep up communication with the sheriff's office and school bus transportation on the latest road conditions.

"We've been in communication with them, trying to keep our kids safe and get them to school," Traylor said.

All in all, officials said if drivers see flooding, they should turn around and don't drown.
