POLICE: Man killed in officer-involved shooting in Whitehouse fired shots toward officers

The Texas Rangers are currently involving the shooting.

Police say the man who died in an officer-involved shooting in Whitehouse Friday was shooting toward officers.

According to a statement from the Whitehouse Police Department, officers responded to a disturbance at the Pecanwood Apartments in the 500 block of W. Main St around 12:15 p.m.  While at the scene, they saw an armed man shooting at officers.

One of the officers returned fire and struck the man. Officers on scene started administering first aid and called for EMS, police said.

The man passed away while on his way to a local hospital, according to Texas Department of Public Safety Sgt. Adam Albritton.

Witnesses told CBS19 reporters the incident started as a domestic call between a man and a woman. Neighbors said when the police arrived, the man exited his apartment and officers asked him to lower his weapon. He responded, “it’s show time” before exchanging fire with the officers.

"I was just putting my babies to sleep and my two daughters were in the living room and we just heard two shots and that’s all I heard was two," said Ashlie Clakle, a resident at the apartment complex. "And I just told them to come in my room and I looked down and I saw his body laying behind my car."

Police have not identified the deceased man.

The Texas Rangers are investigating the shooting under typical protocol. The police officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave until an investigation is complete, police said.

Whitehouse police thanked the Smith County Sheriff's Office and the Texas Rangers for their assistance.

CBS19 will update this article as more information becomes available.
