Record 5 inches of rain floods Longview's Paul Boorman Trail

The trail closed after nearby waterways overflowed and flooded the area. More rain could prompt further closures.

LONGVIEW, Texas — After a record five inches of rain, early Thursday morning, Longview’s Paul Boorman trail was completely underwater, prompting Longview Parks and Recreation to issue a warning to trail goers on their Facebook page.

“Our trails are in floodplains," Longview Parks and Recreation director Scott Caron explained, "And so when we have big rain events like we had last night, unfortunately, all that water has to go somewhere and typically goes right down Borman trail...”

By Thursday afternoon, the water levels were substantially lower, but just a short walk down the trail revealed flood waters still draining.

“You go down a few ways and it’s fine and then of course it kind of dips again and it’s like ‘oh. I'm in a swamp,’” jogger Keithan Tapley said.

But for people not on foot, the water was just a small obstacle.

“With a bike it’s no problem. I think for us it actually just makes it more fun,” bike rider Haden Simmons said.

Longview Parks and Recreation says anymore rainfall of an inch or more will cause more flooding.
