EAST TEXAS PROFESSIONAL CREDIT UNION PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Whitehouse High School softball team

The Wildcats secured a 27-0 win over Tyler High during less than ideal conditions Wednesday night.

WHITEHOUSE, Texas — The weather during the week made it less than ideal for East Texas commuters. While many opted to stay inside to allow the storms to pass, Whitehouse softball played a game Wednesday night.

Whitehouse defeated the Tyler High Lions 27-0 despite the rainy conditions.

The Wildcats have a special way of preparing for adversity throughout the season, like wet and cold temperatures during games, they read.

"We read a book as a team each season, and this year we studied there's two ways to handle pressure and adversity," Whitehouse head softball coach Kaegan Jimenez said. "You can captivate it and take control, or two you can let it captivate you."

Jimenez is in her third year coaching at Whitehouse. With her coaching style, she feels it's important to prepare her athletes for the adversity they'll face in life and on the field.

One of her methods includes a "no jacket" policy for practices.

"We don't wear jackets out here to practice, or any protective rain gear," Jimenez said. "For instances like Wednesday where you do have to battle through and persevere."

The Wildcats have gone 22-6-1 so far this season and are tied for first in the district with Mount Pleasant.

"Going into Wednesday's game we knew it was going to be rough but we have practice that are pressure filled, " softball player Grace Ann McDonald said. "If you mess up somebody takes your spot, which can be tough but it prepares you for game-like environments."

Whitehouse is set to face Mount Pleasant Friday evening, looking for a revenge win to take the top spot in the district.
