The city of Gilmer is coming together after the severe weather damaged their community

After a tornado swept through Upshur County, volunteers are going out in the community to help those in need.

GILMER, Texas — A tornado hit Upshur County during the severe weather earlier in the week, leaving lots of damage in its wake. For some in Gilmer, they woke up to high winds ripping their homes apart. However, the community wasn't going to let them rebuild alone.

"We’re having people bring food in, we’re having people bring chainsaws. We’re sending teams out to go serve the community. We’re taking down trees. Whatever we can do to help people in need… that’s what we’re doing here today," said Pastor George Willis.

George Willis is the Pastor of New Beginnings Baptist Church, which has become the hub for volunteers to provide help. They've had a large turnout so far, and they plan to continue to provide assistance for however much time is needed. However, they have a continued need for volunteers to keep their efforts going.

"Man, I would just encourage them… come and be a part. It’s easy to be involved, it’s easy to be a part. Step out, give it a try, and we’ll help you get connected," said volunteer and Pastor Matt Darby.

Tons of community members made their way to the church to lend a hand, from local residents, those in surrounding areas, and even the UT Tyler women's volleyball team.

One family whose house was demolished during the tornado said they were in awe from the amount of support they received.

"We’ve had so many people, so many volunteers… 20 of them out there cutting up trees. We’ve had so many people that have been so good to us.”

Darby says that seeing the volunteer turnout is one thing that always reminds him about what makes Gilmer stand out.

"So, I think the biggest information we get to have is to see our neighbors help our neighbors," said Darby, "We get to see how we care for one another and love one another. It’s what makes East Texas special and it’s what makes the City of Gilmer special.”
