Around 102,000 Californians moved to Texas in 2022, report says

In addition to the tens of thousands of Californians, 41,000 Floridians and 30,000 New Yorkers moved to Texas in 2022.

AUSTIN, Texas — A new report shows more than 668,000 people moved to Texas from other states in 2022 – and most of those transplants were from California.

Texas Realtors released its 2024 Relocation Report on Tuesday. The report analyzed U.S. Census data from 2022. According to the data, approximately 102,000 Californians moved to Texas in 2022 – more than any other state-to-state relocation total in the U.S.

Meanwhile, more than 41,000 Floridians and 30,000 New Yorkers also made the move to the Lone Star State. Illinois, Louisiana, Colorado and Oklahoma each had roughly 25,000 residents move to Texas.

"There are a number of reasons Texas continues to draw people from other states," Jef Conn, chairman of Texas Realtors, said. "Many new residents enjoy a lower cost of living in Texas or better job opportunities at companies that expand or relocate here. Texas has vibrant large cities, charming small towns, and rural areas with all the space you’d ever want. You can find pretty much any lifestyle you’re seeking here."

California wasn't just the leading source for new Texans – it was also the top destination for outbound Texans. More than 42,000 people moved from the Lone Star State to the Golden State. Florida was the next most popular destination for relocating Texans, followed by Oklahoma.

Texas Realtors also found that more than 3.3 million people moved within Texas in 2022.
