First Day of School: Not just for kids

CBS 19 tagged along with first-year Orr Elementary teacher Destiny Clark on the first day of school.

CBS 19 follows Orr Elementary first-year teacher Destinye Clark.

While the focus is on the first day of school for kids many teachers are just as excited about the start of the year.

Orr Elementary teacher Destinye Clark just wrapped up day one of what's sure to be a great career in education. She teaches third grade writing and science.

CBS 19 tagged along for her first day on the job to see how it went.

“I wanted to be a teacher because I love the kids,” Clark said. “…My teacher told me if I wanted to be the boss I should go to school and be a teacher.”

Clark said she’s extremely excited and hasn’t been able to sleep the past week.

“Last night I was up until about two in the morning thinking about those kids and them walking through the door,” Clark said.

However, like most students Clark said she’s nervous, but knows once the school day kicks in she’ll be okay.

Clark said before the school day started she’s been getting her classroom ready almost every day.

“I have been looking at classrooms on Pinterest and I have been getting ideas and listening to different teachers,” Clark said. “Bulletin boards are the hardest thing. They should have a class on that in college, which has been the hardest part.”

Clark said Dr. Seuss has a quote for everything going on in life.

“Just outside of my door there's a quote that says ‘only you can control your future’ and I want my kids to know you have to take control of your learning,” Clark said. “I am here to facilitate your learning, but you are the one who definitely has to take that initiative and say I can be anything I want to be and I'm in charge of me.”
