The case is under investigation.

JACKSONVILLE, Texas — A teenage suspect has been taken into custody following a Jacksonville shooting that left one teen dead and another critically injured.

According to the Jacksonville Police Department, around 10:20 p.m. on Monday, officers were called to a shooting in the 2000 block of S. Jackson St.

When authorities arrived on scene, they found two brothers with gunshot wounds. Daniel V. Benitez, 15, of Bullard, was taken to a local hospital where he later died. Jesus V. Benitez, 17, also of Bullard, has been hospitalized and is in critical condition.

Police say they have arrested a 15-year-old in connection with the shooting. He has been booked into the Cherokee County Jail for murder. His name will not be released due to his age.

The case remains under investigation.

A GoFundMe has been set up to help the family of Daniel V. Benitez. His cousin, who organized the online fundraiser, said Daniel Benitez will be remembered for his love for God, his parents, siblings, cousins, aunts, uncles, close family and his close friends. He was an amazing son and brother with "a heart of gold" and he brought endless joy to the world and his family.

The fundraiser has a goal of $19,000. The organizer also said there are many questions but no answers at this time.
