Atascosa County resident charged with two counts of animal cruelty, with 27 additional counts pending

Patricia Stone surrendered herself to an Atascosa County Animal Control unit Wednesday morning at the Atascosa County Sheriff’s Office and Jail.

ATASCOSA COUNTY, Texas — KENS 5 brought you this story last month, when 29 dogs were seized from Patricia Stone’s property. Officials said that this case was one of the worst they’ve seen as an agency.

It was just in January when dozens of dogs on Stone’s property were seized. Now she's in handcuffs.

When asked if she feels she made the right decision turning herself in, she replied, "Oh yeah, still better than them coming to get me."

Stone has 27 counts of animal cruelty pending with the county attorney’s office. Thirteen of her dogs that were previously under her care are at the Atascosa County Animal Control facility.

Chief Investigator with Atascosa County Animal Control, Henry Dominguez said this case was hard to watch.

“I don’t like to see any animal being abused so in this case, it’s one of the worst that we as an agency have worked so far since we’ve opened up in 2018,” he said.

Dominguez led his team to seize Stone’s property but he says this isn’t the end of holding her accountable.

“The objective here of course, is upon conviction we would like for her to stop being a rescuer.”

Dominguez received information that Stone has a sign boarded up on her property that reads 'Lucky Paws 4A Purpose'.

“That’s what I was told was that she was possibly starting a puppy rescue.”

He says it’s unclear if she’s asking for donations or starting a new puppy rescue.

"She can’t be doing this, even if it may be in her best interest or her intent is the best at heart," he said. "At the end of the day, those animals are suffering, we can’t have that.”

Patricia Stone is eligible to post bond. She will have her day in court and go before a judge.
