SUPER TUESDAY PREVIEW: Smith County Constable Precinct 4 race

All Precinct 4 Constable candidates are running as Republicans.

All four candidates running for Smith County Constable Precinct 4 have different levels of experience and reasons for wanting to fill the role.

Curtis Wulf is currently a law firm investigator and worked in law enforcement for eight years beginning in 2004.

"I started as a patrol officer and I got supervisory experience and then investigation experience as well," said Wulf.

Charles Garrett retired from the Department of Public Safety and has 30 years of experience.

"I think I'm the best qualified, I've got the most experience," said Garrett.

The current constable, Josh Joplin, took over the position after beating former Smith County Precinct 4 Constable John Smith in 2016.

"Every candidate running for this position other than me has been unemployed or inactive from law enforcement between the amount of three and eight years," said Joplin.

Smith previously spent 10 years as the constable for Precinct 4.

Smith's defeat in 2016 amid backlash after he suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head while intoxicated.

Smith said if elected, he would increase patrol.

Both Garrett and Wulf hope to make a few changes if they are elected but the first goal they have in mind is quite similar.

"The first change I will make is have an open line of communication with the sheriff's office and the other constable's office," said Wulf.

"I want to re-establish a good working relationship with all law enforcement, all governmental agencies, all civic organizations to help the precinct out," said Garrett.

Joplin says after the election he wants to begin adding in more staff to cover the 322 square miles of precinct 4.

"When I made my promises in 2016 to add a night shift officer in to provide more patrol and be more visual, I kept those promises," said Joplin.
