City of Longview applies for $300,000 grant to address flooding at High Street underpass

City of Longview spokesperson Richard Yeakley said ahead of the council meeting it’s not uncommon to have to close the underpass due to high water.

LONGVIEW, Texas — Longview City Council approved on Thursday applying for a state grant to address common flooding issues at the High Street underpass.

The council voted in favor of authorizing the city to apply for a $300,000 grant from the Texas Water Development Board for a preliminary engineering report to mitigate flooding at the High Street underpass between Cotton and Tyler Streets.

That part of High Street is known to have flooding on a rainy day. City of Longview spokesperson Richard Yeakley said ahead of the council meeting it’s not uncommon to have to close the underpass due to high water.

"For years, the city has been tackling drainage issues as funding has been available and this is a new source of funding from the state that would allow us to do the background investigation to come up with a plan to ultimately," Yeakley said. "(And) hopefully address some of the flooding that happens there on High Street at that underpass."

The grant is one step toward figuring out what construction will be necessary to help resolve flooding in this area.
