City of Tyler makes preparations, gives advice ahead of severe cold weather

The city of Tyler is monitoring weather conditions and is prepared for freezing temperatures to hit East Texas.

TYLER, Texas — The city of Tyler is monitoring weather conditions and is prepared for freezing temperatures to hit East Texas.

Looking back at the notorious ice storm that swarmed the state in 2021, the city of Tyler has taken the steps to prevent that from happening again.

"We've learned a lot from previous experiences back in 2021, and even last year, and so we're very prepared this year," Public Information Officer for the city of Tyler Adriana Rodriguez said.

The city of Tyler has also added back up generators at both water treatment plants.

"We have done tests this week to do a full load to make sure that they can handle the full capacity of each plant. And they were successful," Rodriguez said.

Freezing temperatures can affect your pipes too. The city recommends making sure they’re fully covered with insulation and to leave cabinet doors open to help circulate the warm air in.

If a power outage does occur, Adriana said the city is set up with Oncor to be a priority place.

"So that they don't do real rolling blackouts on our main locations, like the water treatment plants," Rodriguez said.

Rodriguez also mentioned if residents see any significant water main breaks or damage to report it to the water service center. They will be fully staffed and on call to make sure they're prepared for this expected freeze.

People can also get notified on any water main breaks through the city's RAVE alert link.
