Historical marker for Longview's 1919 race riot to be placed outside courthouse

LONGVIEW, Texas — A state marker to remember one of the darkest chapters in Longview's history has found a home outside the Gregg County Courthouse.

Gregg County commissioners Monday unanimously approved placing a historical marker for the 1919 race riot in the courthouse's rose garden, which is across Methvin Street from where a Black journalist was beaten in the lead up to the riot.

The marker was sponsored by the 1919 Remembrance Project, a group of residents dedicated to researching the event and advocating for its recognition. Members began working to secure the historical marker in 2021.
