LONGVIEW, Texas — Residents made it out safely after their Gregg County home burned down late Monday morning.
The fire occurred on Sparks Rd. in the Longview area. The homeowners were able to escape unharmed before firefighters arrived on scene.
Fire Marshal Bert Scott says crews arrived just before 11 a.m. to find flames coming through the roof. He says the majority of the fire was in the attic, but the roof also collapsed because of the flames.
The home was destroyed.
"So when that roof all collapsed, and put it down on the living quarters, which caused all that heavy roofing material (to be) on top of stuff burning. So they got to dig that stuff out to get to those hotspots," Scott said. "It's just a tedious task."
Scott added the freezing temperatures affected the response as well, such as having to deal with frozen hose lines and pumps.
The location and the cause of the fire are under investigation by the Gregg County Fire Marshal's Office.
