Texas students recognized in app development contest

The winning app is called FoodCycle. It uses an online marketplace to redistribute excess food so it doesn't go to waste.

AUSTIN, Texas — On Monday, students in Austin were recognized for developing apps.

Congressman Lloyd Doggett was at Austin ISD's Liberal Arts and Science Academy, or LASA, to present awards to students who created their own apps and entered the Congressional App Challenge.

The winning app in Doggett's district is called FoodCycle. It uses an online marketplace to redistribute excess food so it doesn't go to waste.

"We developed this app to try to provide supermarkets and local food redistributors an easy way to establish a connection to local nonprofits and food banks, to kind of mitigate this issue between food insecurity and food waste," student Vedant Sangani said.

Doggett also recognized runners-up on Monday. The winning students will get to attend an event at the U.S. Capitol in April and see their app displayed among other winners from across the country.

Doggett said he hosted the competition to empower Austin students interested in computer science and STEM, providing middle and high school students with an opportunity to demonstrate their computer science skills and creativity for national recognition.
