Smith County Pct. 1 Commissioner Pam Frederick withdraws recount request, officially conceding to challenger

After counters spent hours recounting paper ballots, Frederick decided to withdraw her recount petition for the Smith County Pct. 1 commissioner Republican primary.

TYLER, Texas — Smith County Pct. 1 Commissioner Pam Frederick has withdrawn her request for the recount in connection with her March Republican primary loss.

Christina Drewry received 4,636 votes, or 50.55% of the vote, while Frederick received 4,535 votes, or 49.45% of the vote, in the March 5 primary election, according to Smith County official election results.

Last week, Frederick requested a manual recount, citing the fact that the difference in votes was less than 10%. The recount began Tuesday at the Cotton Belt Building in Tyler.

After counters spent 10 hours recounting paper ballots, Frederick decided to withdraw her recount petition for the Smith County Pct. 1 commissioner Republican primary.

"More than 3,000 votes were recounted which comprises approximately one-third of the total vote for the race. There were no discrepancies in the vote count, proving that the electronic voting system used in Smith County is accurate," Frederick said in an email to Smith County Republican Party Chair David Stein.

She added that she has no intent to petition again for a recount in this race because Tuesday's efforts have proven the electronic system in Smith County is accurate.

Frederick thanked Stein for his professional approach in the unfamiliar territory of a recount.

She accepted the official election results, and in doing so, she conceded to Drewry.

Drewry will be the Republican nominee for Smith County Pct. 1 commissioner. With no Democratic challenger in November, she is likely to become the next Pct. 1 commissioner.
