TxDOT crews beginning 24-hour monitoring of winter road conditions across East Texas

TxDOT is encouraging individuals to remain at home to avoid potentially dangerous road conditions.

TYLER, Texas — TxDOT crews are beginning 24-hour monitoring of roadway conditions ahead of the winter storm in East Texas.

Starting at 6 p.m. on Sunday, crews will begin working 12-hour shifts, from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. to monitor roadways, bridges, and overpasses throughout the city of Tyler.

Brine application operations made their rounds on Friday morning through Anderson, Cherokee, Gregg, Henderson, Rusk, Smith, Van Zandt, and Wood counties, according to the press release.

As temperatures continue to plummet, roads can become even more slick after brine is applied. TxDOT is encouraging individuals to remain at home to avoid potentially dangerous road conditions.

TxDOT crews are continuing to monitor the forecast and weather conditions throughout Monday and will respond as prompted to ensure roadways remain open and safe for travel when possible.

Here are some safe driving tips to keep in mind:

  • Avoid unnecessary travel if conditions warrant.
  • Be extra cautious on bridges, overpasses, ramps, turns and shaded areas that usually freeze first.
  • Reduce speed and allow extra time to reach destinations.
  • Increase the following distance between you and other vehicles.
  • If you start to slide, ease off the gas pedal or brakes and steer into the direction of skid.
  • Stay back at least 200 feet from vehicles treating roadways and move over for emergency vehicles.
  • Be patient. Your trip time could increase when adverse weather conditions exist.
  • Remain in your vehicle. If stranded, please call 911 to alert emergency services.
