City of Tyler asks residents to prepare ahead of expected large crowds, heavy traffic during solar eclipse

"We know things will get a bit hectic on Monday, so we encourage people to come early and stay late after the eclipse passes," Tyler Fire Chief David Coble said.

TYLER, Texas — The City of Tyler is expecting a large amount of visitors starting Friday for the April 8 solar eclipse and officials are urging residents to be prepare.

The city is encouraging community members to:

  • Stay home to avoid heavy traffic
  • Get gas, groceries, and prescriptions before eclipse day to avoid long lines/shortages.
  • If you are going somewhere to watch the eclipse, prepare for the heavy traffic—especially after the eclipse when people leave at the same time.
  • Make non-urgent appointments for a different day.

"We know things will get a bit hectic on Monday, so we encourage people to come early and stay late after the eclipse passes," Tyler Fire Chief David Coble said. "If you will be driving during the eclipse, please keep your eyes on the road and don't stop until you reach a parking lot. Also, keep an eye out for distracted pedestrians and drivers."
