Martin's Mill Lady Mustangs reflect on their state championship win

Martin's Mill claimed the state championship with a 44-42 win over Nocona. This is their first state victory since 2019.

VAN ZANDT COUNTY, Texas — Martin's Mill faced off with Nocona for the state title and it all came down to the last 3 seconds of the game when freshman Kara Nixon scored at the buzzer giving the Lady Mustangs a 44-42 victory.

"I wasn't really thinking much in that moment, but since the shot went in and seeing all of them just come at me. It was the best moment that I could have ever imagined happening." Nixon said.

Head coach Jay Bruce said "She had made multiple shots and I'm thinking to myself, the game is tied and we have enough time for her to attack the basket. I got her attention and said get to the rim."

The Martin's Mill basketball program has a legacy winning seven state championships.

"What meant the most to me is just for our team to get to do it. Martin's Mill has been doing it and has done it so many times.  You're are looked at like you are good but are y'all really as good as all these previous teams?"

Now they get to go home thinking of some new bling.
