Flash flood safety

With recent high water in Lufkin and more rain on the way, here are a few reminders when it comes to flooding.

LUFKIN, Texas — It is one of the deadliest natural disasters in the United States - flooding. 

There are several types of flooding including river flooding, areal flooding and flash flooding. 

On Mothers Day, the city of Lufkin experienced high water from a Flash Flood event following hours of heavy rainfall.

Flash flooding is the most dangerous as it can occur rapidly with water levels rising within six hours of the storm.

According to the National Weather Service, each year it is estimated that close to 90 lives are lost due to flash flooding and nearly half of all flash flood deaths are vehicle related.

It only takes six inches of water to stall a car or sweep you off your feet. In a foot of water, you car can float and with just two feet of water, your car can be swept away.

If flooding occurs, move to higher ground immediately. Do not attempt to cross high water by car or on foot. When the water does recede, watch for broken glass, downed wires and debris.

Remember, turn around don't drown.
