The caller then insisted she was required to pay $3,600 in Bitcoin for the warrant in addition to $1,400 for a "first-time offender fee".

LUFKIN, Texas — Lufkin officials are alerting the community after one woman was scammed $5,000 for a fraudulent jury duty scam on Tuesday.

According to city officials, the woman received a call from a 936 area code, informing her of a warrant she needed to pay.

The caller then insisted she was required to pay $3,600 in Bitcoin for the warrant in addition to $1,400 for a "first-time offender fee".

Since the caller unveiled the woman's personal information, she sent the caller $5,000 but later contacted her bank realizing it was a scam.

Local law enforcement officials are urging people to to hang up and report the incident if they believe they have fallen victim to this scam.

"We want to reiterate that law enforcement will never contact you in this manner and requesting via Bitcoin, gift cards, etc.," according to the press release.
